Re-imagining Research Ethics at
BMY Health
Modern Research Thrives on Trust
Modern research thrives on trust! The trust of participants who share their stories and bodies, the trust of societies that host studies within their cultural fabric, and the trust of scientists who push the boundaries of knowledge, often with little benefits. At BMY Health, we recognize this as a living, interconnected ecosystem. Our ethics board is not just about reviewing documents; it’s about sustaining this ecosystem.
The origins of Institutional Review Boards
The origins of Institutional Review Boards lie in the painful lessons of the past, born out of global reflection after World War II. The subject of research ethics emerged, beginning with the Nuremberg Code in 1947, introducing the concept of voluntary consent, followed by more Declarations; Helsinki and the Belmont Report, introducing principles like beneficence, justice, and respect for persons, which laid the foundation for today’s Institutional Review Boards (IRBs).
Today, we carry that legacy forward, not completing a checklist but as a transformative, continued process. Our mandate goes beyond protecting individual rights, we defend the cultural, societal, and professional norms that frame and nurture the research enterprise.
Modern Ethics as a Process
Our process doesn’t stop at informed consent or data confidentiality. We delve into how research narratives shape minds and influence communities. We ensure the research does not inadvertently harm the cultural, societal, religious norms important to the communities that researchers aim to serve. We understand that a research proforma is not only a tool for data collection but also a potential agent of change, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Cultural & Societal Sensitivity
Just as participants need protection, so do the researchers who often remain under-recognized, and sometimes suffer in the process of advancing science, including exposure physical or emotional risks in sensitive data collection, risk in fieldwork, and backlash from industry or institutional pressures. Others contend with academic marginalization when their discovery challenges established norms. At BMY Health, we are committed to safeguarding the dignity and welfare of our scientists. We build mechanisms that protect every stakeholder in this ecosystem, fostering a respectful, and transparent research culture.
Researcher Protection Focus
When all voices are respected and protected, science can truly thrive. We invite researchers, reviewers, and communities alike to join us in cultivating higher standards for research ethics, those that honor trust, promotes justice, and powers ethical discovery!
